April 2009-excerpts from Instant Messaging before we left

Laura: i couldn't get a Canadian money order for my life, nor a prepaid envelope from toronto to stratford to include. Did you see Michael moore's doc called "the big one?" about how America has it's head shoved up his ass. I never cease to be amazed!

Leah: dolly - this is great news. we are well on our way. except the part where you were running around stressed out and shut down. not even a canadian money order? that is ass on a bun.

Laura: so if i want to photograph midwives/prenatal care/childbirth in India..can you help me get access? i'm willing to volunteer some time while we are there for a chance to make photos.. you got any hookups?

Leah: hey - yeah - the women i know will prob not be on the streets but who knows. i am asking mainak right now on chat about it and he will look into this for us. maybe the best bet is to start with some kind of clinic? Some other friends are also going to be large on the scene and they will have a privileged perspective - very wealthy people and natural childbirth in calcutta - could be interesting

the thing is these people are so giving that if you ask for something they will make it happen somehow. ive never seen anything like it.

Laura: how do we repay them? can i bring something for Maniak/our other hosts?

Leah: They get offended a bit when we say thank you all of the time. They think its too formal and friends don't need to do it. But we will do something for them. Xoxoxo

Leah: Mainak wants one gents perfume. Which is Indian for colonge. I want to find out what my friends husband wears. I think its Hugo boss. You can grab it at a duty free and we can split the cost or whatever. He is a film maker and has someone on his crew who is in charge of location and scouting for doc content etc. I forget what he called him. But anyways, he said he will either out this guy with you or take you out himself.....

Laura: awesome. i may grab some d an g original..it makes a man delicious. I'll just have to keep my wits about me :)

Leah: yes you will - there will be plenty of delicious romance. calcutta is like paris and new york combined with a healthy dose of grit and disgusting. its kind of dreamy.

and then we chatted and made plans…

11:15 AM leah: no prob - it will all come together

11:16 AM leah: i had a nice night to myself - needed that - and shiva like having me around too. going to see eden and brian play tongiht - so that will be fun

11:18 AM leah: that sounds so lovely

leah: indeed

me: ps..i was looking at photos of you from the other day.. and i've decided you are TEN years younger.

11:21 AM 84 degrees in Calcutta

leah: woooooooo

11:22 AM send me some pictures of me 10 years younger

me: ok i will!!!

leah: i would love to see them

me: and isn't it night in calcutta? Hahah

leah: 84 degrees but the rains havent hit yet
yeah, i didnt want to say but the sun going down makes no diff
it isnt a sun heat, in fact it is so polluted that the sun doesnt get through. its a humid
its like a haze

me: oh that sounds JOYFUL

leah: man - it might even be like an alternate reality
it is in its own way

Chat 4.27.09
leah: hey lady - as far as i can tell the vaccinations are recommended but not required
3:59 PM i do recommend this A quinolone antibiotic is usually prescribed: either ciprofloxacin (Cipro)(PDF) 500 mg twice daily or levofloxacin (Levaquin) (PDF) 500 mg once daily for a total of three days. i took cipro with me in case of runny poos
they can be really bad if it is an infection although you can buy them there at the pharmacy without a doctor im not sure of the quality etc so i will prob pick some up at the doctor

4:00 PM my visa should be here this week and then i think we should book our tickets seperately on jet airways online - same days etc - i can do it first and then tell you the exact flight so you can book it too then - we just call them to arrange the seating

4:01 PM the cost is 1500 canadian and i found some direct to delhi flights from toronto - which is awesome leaving on the 26th of june i will send you the link
hold on

4:07 PM leah: https://secure.jetairways.com/jetobe/OnlineBooking.aspx
4:13 PM leah: ok - i misread it we stop in Brussels and i think the stopver in delhi is long like we arrive in the eve and connect to calcutta in the morning
we can play with that and look at other options but that might be the beest we can do
we will be in india at least

(the next am)

Laura: woot woot!

i paid $1541 cdn...but i'm on the SAME PLANES!!!! YAY! we're going to freaking INDIA!!!!!

lets talk later..we have accommodations?? as long as there is airconditioning!!! let me know if we need to pay or reserve that.. i just can't believe it's finally going to happen-I have wanted to go to India for as long as I can remember!

:)

Leah: the place mainak got for us is AC double room 1000 rupees per night.
I think that is like 25 dollars. we will land up there for a few nights and see how we like it. there are other areas to explore and my friend has an empty apartment we may be able to crash at - but i dont think they have AC, so that can't happen.

Its called Executive Point Guest House and its near Garihat which is an awesome part of cal - I love south calcutta.

Laura: oh my.. the tagline at that place is "we feel pleasure in pleasing people"...let's hope so!!

:)))))

Leah: dude - that is just the beginning of our calcutta english hillariousness.

(later that day) and by the way OH MY F*&% i am excited now. I got shiva handled and the visa and my girl laura. thank you thank you for being inspired to do this with me.

Leah: whatever it is that i am doing or have to do in india - will be revealed when i get there. my india stuff is huge - and it could also be nothing at all. but it takes up a lot of space - or at least, it did. one easier thing is that the tourist season is off so the people i know will not be on the streets. that will be good. i might try to find them a bit. but they are prob long gone. esp the kids - they wont be kids anymore.
Leah: i have not had good experiences with 'bringing' people along on that journey. anyone who has come to calcutta with me has said 'go f*&% yourself sherry - see you at the airport'. i think a lot has changed since those days. the whole purpose for the trip is different. i hope you are feeling ok about it and if you are then thank you for holding a space for me to freak out a bit.

Laura: baby, you always have freak-out room with this gal. i mean f&*% -if i don't allow you yours, i most certainly can't expect you to give me mine :). And that will come for sure.

I am open to everything you talk about, and am glad to give you your space. I feel comfortable and will have a home base and a guy to go to meetings with-and i will always have meetings when i need support and people also, so i will have more than just you to lean on. i kind of look at this trip that we are both on our own journey to India and will have each other to come home to at night in the emotional sense.
See you next weekend lady. Do you have time also on Sunday for me?

Lahore: make sure you have some Kulfi we a'comin'. love you bazillions.

Leah: honey bunny
i think i would like to be there for 10 days. is that too short for you? maybe 12 days. i was thinking to book my ticket on monday or tues. i will text you when i am about to do it and then immediately send you the flight info.
xooxoxoooxoxoxo

Laura: what is our return travel date? did you book your flight yet? let me kjnow, and i'll get right to booking it. thanks on the antibiotic recommendation.. so there aren't any vaccinations that are required? awesome-i don't want any avian flu injected into me!! I'm waiting on my renewed passport, then i have to send it in to get my visa, so i might be squeaking it in, but i'm not too worried at the moment.

Leah: hi lovely - hmm - i won't be getting any vaccinations. not sure what to recommend. i would stick with whatever the travel clinic recommends.
